In case you haven’t heard, the #turnbasedthursdayfest was held last week (4-8 April), and we are now in the final hours. This celebration of turn-based games was created by the turnbasedthursday team in collaboration with Steam! They’ve hand-picked over 350 games to be featured, many of which have discounts and demos available.

We love looking ahead to see what great turn-based games are on the horizon, and there’s been no shortage of exciting titles to showcase during the event. It’s April, and beyond the usual remarks about time flying, let’s dive into the most interesting upcoming releases for Turn-Based RPGs and Strategy games. Although not numerous, this selection includes titles I’ve been eagerly awaiting and others that might be this month’s dark horses.

April could be a significant month for RPGs, with one of the most anticipated isometric cRPGs finally launching after several delays, Square Enix returning to its turn-based roots with a new installment in a famous series, and the debut of a title I’m particularly excited for in 2024, serving as a spiritual successor to one of the greatest JRPGs ever. So, let’s start our list of the most interesting releases of April 2024.

TURN-BASED RPGS OF MARCH 2024: WHAT’S NEW TO PLAY

Mamma Mia is the typical Neapolitan Exclamation for something extraordinary or very relevant, and it fits perfectly when learning about March 2024 Turn-Based RPGs, strategy games, and rogue-lites releases.

I’ll summarize everything I think is worth considering this month. There are some very interesting RPGs, tactical games tested in demos that really impressed me, original roguelites, and even a strategy game that could become a worthy rival of Civilization. Get comfortable because we’re starting.

THE MOST INNOVATIVE TURN-BASED DECK BUILDERS

The deck-building genre, particularly the rogue-like deck-builder subgenre, has become tremendously
popular ever since the release of Slay The Spire and the abundance of clones that rushed to capitalize
on its success.

While many deck-builders attempt to clone Slay The Spire’s formula, there are a handful of games
that make an effort to innovate on its gameplay and structure. Of course, not every deck-builder
takes inspiration from Slay The Spire, which itself took inspiration from tabletop games such as
Dominion is extremely reminiscent of the niche indie title Dream Quest.

CONCLUSION
Deck-builders have become so popular and release with such frequency that it’s easy to miss the few fresh and innovative experiences that are released every year. However, these games each offer something new and interesting in an over-crowded market.

While it could be argued that games such as Dream Quest and even Dominion (an innovative tabletop deck-builder with a Steam version) are arguably among the most innovative deck-builders out there, these games arguably offer more streamlined experiences for modern audiences.

TOP SCI-FI RPGS WITH TURN BASED COMBAT

The genre of role-playing games is a saturated market, having existed in video game format for decades, and having roots in tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. Due to the genre’s origins being mostly fantasy-themed ventures, it stands to reason that video games would follow suit in their adaptation of the RPG. While some managed to successfully break the mold in the 90s with games like Fallout, RPGs have remained fantasy-dominant. However, this has changed in recent years, and there’s now an abundance of RPGs for science fiction fans.

From old-school RPGs in the Fallout franchise, to sandbox games developed by small indie teams, there are a variety of fun and engaging experiences on this list that are packed with strong RPG systems and in-depth progression. Most importantly, however, while not all of the games on this list are combat-focused, all of them feature tactical turn-based combat that often rewards players for careful planning and, in the case of grid-based systems, positional awareness.

On The Radar – PC Turn-Based RPG & Strategy Games Releasing On August 2022

FAREWELL WORDS

The original title of this article was supposed to be “A “meh” month? No, a “meh” me” and it should have been a reflection about my progressive difficulty to get attached to new games, because of my mental laziness and my inability to learn and understand all the way new mechanics and new features.
But, then, something changed. What was just a far intention, has grown, becoming, first, a goodbye and, then, a real farewell. 

Partly behind this decision, there is the fear of becoming repetitive, writing articles that haven’t anything really new to say, or, maybe, the simple necessity to look at new things.
For years I wrote the column “On The Radar” and “10 turns Interview” always trying to say something original and not specifically related to the world of videogames. The best part was the chance to meet and talk to so many devs, sharing their thoughts, hopes and ambitions. For this, I’ve to thank only one person: Marcello, who has my deep gratitude.

It’s never easy to say goodbye. Once someone said: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard” and this is true. After all, saying “hello” and “goodbye” looks quite similar, in both cases you don’t know what it’s waiting for you just up ahead, with the difference that a “farewell” always contains a loss. 

For me, saying goodbye to Turn Based Lovers is a very hard and sad thing, but I think this is the right moment to turn the page. 
I feel ready to try new adventures, perhaps writing for someone else or about something else. One thing is for sure: I can’t live without videogames and without people that, just like me, loves videogames, but, for now, I’ve done with Turn Based Lovers. Maybe, later on, I’ll come back (If Marcello still wants me) to write something foolish again, as usual, but not for now.

Perhaps, after years spent writing ABOUT videogames, this is the right time for me to write FOR a videogame. I’m pretty good at creating stories and, out there, there are so many good videogames without a good story, so who knows? If anyone is looking for a crazy writer, let’s just say that I’m here!
Anyone who knows me quite well, knows that I like quotes very much, so this is for everybody who had the patience to read everything I wrote. Thanks.

ABOUT MEDVEDEV, VIDEOGAMES AND MONKEY ISLAND

Have you ever felt sad without an apparent reason? I think it’s something that each of us has experimented, with at least one time in his/her life. What you can do in these situations is 1) try to figure out what is the reason behind your sadness, racking your brain the whole day; 2) try to think of something funny.
First, let me say that there isn’t a valid solution for all, it simply depends on what kind of person you are. For example, if you are just like me, then, believe me, the solution n. 1) is not a good idea: you can never know what you might discover about yourself! Complicated people need a simple life, this is the main reason why my head is hardly ever “full of thoughts”. Believe me, it’s not so bad feeling light-headed now and then!

So, excluding the n. 1), for people just like me what remains is only the “try to think of something funny” solution. Of course, these days, it’s not so easy to think about something funny and may not be enough reading a random Dmitry Medvedev‘s shitpost…

But we can’t forget that we are, in the first place, videogamers, so when we are sad without a reason we can try to regain our good mood by laughing “with” or”of” videogames, reminding us that being a videogamer can always have its advantages. For example, if your life isn’t very satisfying you can always say something like “ok, it’s true, my life was ruined by my obsession with video games, but fortunately, I had another two lives”. Or, if you have just broken up with your girlfriend, you are allowed to play a lot of videogames, because you need to uh… console yourself.

Sometimes is the videogame itself that can give us a smile.

A BIG FAT ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

I could continue to look the other way, to talk about how many great games are going to be released this month, how beautiful they will be and how happy we will be, but everyone knows we have a big problem. Hardly anyone seems eager to talk about it, but, nonetheless, the “brutal reality” is always before our eyes, and Its horrors prevent me from thinking clearly of anything else.

Once someone said, “Never ignore the elephant in the room. That’s rude; play with it and introduce it.” So, this time, I decided to put aside my silly irony and talk about it, to talk about War.

Nowadays, it seems possible to discuss just about anything. They call it “relativism“; it essentially means everyone has the right to think whatever they want about anything. I’m not sure I like this mindset. I’m convinced that there are ideas, rights and values that must be considered universal, with no exceptions.
We can discuss whether a dress is nice or ugly, or whether for a man to be a true Italian, he MUST have a wonderful mustache, but if I say that War is tragedy, is this arguable?

I’m referring not only to the Ukrainian war, but to any kind of aggression. I often heard things like, “have you considered that this war can be justified by … ?” (fill the gap with random words: history, threats and so on). My answer will always be “no”. To me, there is no excuse for violence. Violence can never be the “right answer”. Violence is not any kind of answer. It’s just a reaction, a “wrong reaction”.

You can change its name – you can call a war “a military operation” or “a peace-keeping mission”. You can call the shit many names, but it will always smell like shit.

Not long ago, I’ve interviewed Vallynne, the developers of Shores Unknown – a small team mainly composed of Russians. Very nice guys who spent a ton of time injecting life into their dreams. In a recent statement, they declared they had to cease the development, after many years of effort – because of a war they considered foolish. And this isn’t the only case. Many other games – like Stalker 2, Atomic Heart, Replaced – have an uncertain future ahead of them.

It may be tempting to say, “it’s not so important, these are just games!” But it’s not like that. Video games aren’t just products. They are made by people, the developers, who have their lives, their homes and families – and many of whom are from countries involved in war. Ukrainian and Russian people, who invested all they have in a project, who now see their dreams destroyed (or suspended) by the madness of a bunch of fools.

Do you really think there is a justification for all this insanity?

Truth be told, it isn’t always easy to find a good topic to talk about every month. Usually, I try to find ideas by looking at the month’s games. How many times, playing a game, have you thought “WHY isn’t it possible to do this!?!” or “WHY would I have to do that!”? In other words, how many times have you desired to be in the shoes of the developer?

I’m sure that, apart from me, everyone out there has great ideas about how to develop a game – Ideas that deserve to be realized. But how?

Well, nowadays, if you want to create a game from scratch – without knowing anything about coding – you can use incredible tools like Dreams, RPG Maker and so on. What about the past, though?

The first home computer that hosted a code-less game-maker was the Commodore 64. I don’t think I have to explain to you what this machine represented for millions of teens in the world, during the fabulous 80s and 90s. Let’s just say that Commodore 64 was the first computer powerful enough to allow for the development of such tools.
The most well-known was, probably, the SEUCK (Shoot’Em Up Construction Kit). It allowed anyone, with but a bit of patience, to create action games with vertical or horizontal scrolling. Like SlapFight, GunSmoke, Led Storm, Xevious, etc.

Of course, even on some less powerful machines, there had been something similar before. Like The Quill on the Spectrum, which was a program to write home computer adventure games. Yet there was nothing compared to a “monster” like the SEUCK.

The second one is that this month is going to be very very rich, with games for almost every taste. True – most of them are indie projects. This, however, certainly doesn’t mean they won’t be able to catch your attention.
Extravagance and originality are the leitmotif of the month! So much so that we could find games where the hero is called Hiro, where the main quest is to go and get some sugar, or where you can fight foes by playing on a banjo.

ON INDIE GAMES, SALT BAE AND HOT TUB STREAMERS

Sometimes I found myself asking: why I like so much indie games, rather than, for example, triple-A videogames?

As always the answer is not so simple, mainly because it’s often hard for me to talk to myself (“we” are often arguing against each other…), but my impression is that this time, the answer is not inside me, but simply… outside.
I mean, it happens that sometimes to make your ideas clear, you just have to look at what it’s happening all around you.

So, somewhere in the world, there is a guy who spent £ 37.000 for a dinner in one of the Salt Bae’s restaurant.
Now, for the uninitiated, Salt Bae is a… how to say, Turkish “chef”, defined by someone as “The King of the Meat”, very well-known for his ability to theatrically drop salt from a height, showing his abundant dose of expertise and muscles. It seems that he is so good at throwing salt, that many women can reach the orgasm just watching him doing that “thing” (oh man, I’m so jealous…)! Not bad for a handful of salt, isn’t it?

When we talk about the "war" between Steam and the other digital shops, like Epic Games, many people justify their preferences for the first one essentially because it can still offer many unique features.
Among them, a special place is reserved for the users or the curators reviews.
To be honest, when it’s time to buy a new game, even I cannot avoid reading some Steam reviews about it. Sometimes they can be really useful, sometimes not, but, for sure, if a game has an average low rating, then it will likely be really bad. But, to be honest, sometimes some reviews don’t seem so "trustworthy"…
Now, it is not my intention to express a general opinion about the usefulness of the Steam reviews, because, as it happens in many other areas, mostly depends on the seriousness of who is expressing the opinion, but, believe me, in some cases, there are reviews that, despite their uhm… “quality”, they are simply impossible to forget!

I have to make a confession, a terrible confession: until a few days ago I’d never read a novel written by Douglas Adams. Now I’m aware that Adams was a true genius, capable of being extremely hilarious and smart, at the same time.
Just reading one of his book, a sentence caught my attention, a sentence that I immediately linked to the release of Ultimate Adom.
He wrote: "I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be".
I don't know if all of you are aware of the debates that accompanied the release of this game so now I try to summerize what happened. Essentially, when the developer decided to release the full version of the game, some people got angry (or at least, concerned) because some features and some promised contents seemed to be missing.

Upcoming turn-based games

Usually August is not very exciting from the point of view of the releases.

Indeed, with the arrival of the Summer, even the purest turn-based lover feels the need to take a break from his favorite games, maybe going somewhere, away from the sweltering heat of the cities.
It is undeniable, in fact, that nowadays our beloved PCs looks more and more like a charcoal stove, a circumstance very useful during the winter, but that not when outside is so hot that you can see a fire hydrant chasing a dog.
But, even if this month may appear not so good for the release of a game, the list below can give us more than a reason to change our mind.

During August will be released 17 turn-based games (and I’m sure I missed a game or two…), and to be honest I cannot even remember a month so generous in terms of releases. A renaissance? A coincidence? Who knows, but what I know is that this month there is no time for chit- chat.

So, forget the heat, put your PC in the fridge and live this fantastic turn-based month!

P.S. Speaking of heat, do you know what is faster, hot or cold? Hot, because you can always catch a… cold… Ok I’ll be quiet now.

Have you ever seen that old movie, Sliding Doors, or even wondered about the possibility to manipulate the Time? Well, this is, for sure, one of the most fascinating and, yet, abused topic of all time.
In literature, the time travel or, more generally, the chance to change the past or the future has always been a suggestive and exciting exercise. Maybe one of the first modern novel focused on it was “A Descent into the Maelström” by Edgar Alan Poe (1833), but, after that, the number of works in this regard has become almost uncountable.
Over the years books, movies and, lastly, videogames tried to explain to us how fantastic and, sometimes, terrible is to play with the Time. Talking about what we like most, it’s almost impossible not to mention Bioshock Infinite, Crono Trigger or, if we want to consider something more recent, Iron Danger. But, in most cases, like in the aforementioned Bioshock Infinite, the manipulation of time remains in the background, influencing just the story behind the game, but not directly the gameplay.

On The Radar – June 2021

A few days ago – at least, at the time of writing – it has been released one of the most promising turn-based games of the year: Solasta Crown of the Magister.
I haven’t played it yet, but, in the meantime, I’ve read the accurate and well-written Doubt’s review. Even if, overall, Solasta is described as a great game, among its few flaws, Doubt have listed one particular downside that has caught my attention: the story.
In fact, although Solasta seems to excel in most sectors (from its dynamic combat to the innovative use of the environment), the story is described as “unremarkable at best, confusing and nonsensical at worst (…) even the NPCs are boring and relatively lifeless“.
Well, in my modest opinion, this one of the biggest problem of the entire “fantasy genre”.
To better express my thoughts, I can simply refer to a question I recently wrote for one of my upcoming interviews (a very big one, trust me!).
Thinking about the evolution of the fantasy genre through the recent years, I wrote that, in almost every single fantasy RPG, you will always find at least two or three of these random story elements: a) the rise of a great evil; b) a man who loses his memory; c) the “chosen one”, usually the man without memory as before, which is the medieval version of a superhero; d) a journey through places that necessarily include: deserts, ice lands and volcanoes; e) a conflict between races. Those elements are so strong embedded into the genre that it is almost impossible to consider “fantasy” a game whose story is missing one of them.

On the Radar – April 2021

Let's see all the Turn-based RPGs & Strategy Games releasing during the month of April

This is a strange month, not the best one, that’s for sure, but also not the luckiest.
Why are you wondering? It pretty much rolls off the tongue.
Just a few minutes ago I was writing an editorial, taking inspiration from the biggest release of the month (at least for me) namely Humankind, a Civilization-esque strategy game developed by the talented Amplitude Studios.
I could have talked about the natural propensity for violence of the humankind and the role of all of this in the world of videogames. Hot stuff, believe me 😉 But… there will be none of that, because, exactly while I was doing some research, the unexpected happened: I read the worst of news, Humankind had been delayed to 17th August!!!

Ok, the good news is that I have already (almost) written the editorial for that month, so you already know what to expect or what to fear…
What remains of this month is a bundle of indie turn-based videogames (some of them with a very good potential) and some big releases, essentially reserved to all JRPGs fans scattered all over the world.

About choices and consequences

One of the most recurring topic for an aged videogamer/RPG addicted like me is: "Be sure that the story of our game will be heavily influenced by your CHOICES!". I mean, anyone who has ever played, just for once, a pen & paper RPG is well aware that the beauty and the charm of this particular kind of hobby lies in the unpredictability of the player’s choices and in the consequent impact of them on the story.
To better explain what I want to say, I’m going to tell you about what happened to me the very first time I’ve played to a P&P RPG. We were a group of five or six friends, everyone in their late teens, and we were playing to D&D (don’t ask me which version, I’m not an expert…). There was a great atmosphere: laughter, tension and chips were everywhere, and we were really enjoying our adventure, thanks also to a skilled dungeon master.
At a certain point, our characters were in front of a cave with a very narrow entrance. Everybody knew that the inside the cave was full of strong monsters (if I’m not wrong, they were some kind of lizard fighters…) and the idea of going into the cave one at a time was almost a suicide. We were in a deadlock…
But, suddenly, I had an idea.
I asked every player what kind of items they were carrying, and, among a pile of junk, I found exactly what I was looking for, the DEFINITIVE WEAPON: a…uh… strange herb. Nobody really knew what it was for, but I decided to do something a bit crazy with it. First of all, I started a fire very close to the entrance of the cave and then I decided to burn the herb on it. Not satisfied with all this, I used my cloak with the purpose to direct the smoke into the cave.

February will be a very strange month. As you can see from the list below, the next weeks will be very interesting for us and full of releases, BUT, for the very first time, I noticed that most of them will be Early Access releases. So, before letting you read my list, I decided to torture you talking about what represents for me this implacable trend of the Early Access releases.
That being said, I have neither time nor the required language skill to write a satisfying article about this topic, so I decided to share with you just a couple of thoughts about it.

Let’s start talking about the possible drawbacks.
Most of the E.A. videogames, at the time of their release, are based on promises, ideas, and features, all things essentially left to our imagination. This means that, when a Steam customer decides to buy an E.A. game, he already knows that he isn’t going to receive what he really wants from the final product, but only a chance to see his own desire satisfied. In other words, he somehow invests (or bets) in the future. In this way, often the buyers aren’t attracted by the qualities that the game already has, but by a handful of promises. From a certain point of view, the purchase of an E.A. videogame is nothing more and nothing less than a gamble and this is something that everyone should be aware of.
This is confirmed also by other circumstances.
Have you ever noticed that it is not so uncommon for an E.A. game to have a very long list of promised features and a very short list of what has been already done? The worst part of it is that often what is promised to the players has nothing to do with the skill of the developers, but only with their imagination, and everybody knows that promises are a double-edged sword (personally I don’t agree with Mark Twain when he says “It is better a broken promise than none at all“).
And you have to consider also that the aforementioned problems may become even bigger if we are talking about a videogame developed by a rookie studio…

We are finally in the new year and taking a quick assessment I cannot say that my 2020 has been bad. Life has given me a daughter, work, even if a bit slowed down, has never stopped, so I am grateful and look to 2021 with even more optimism.

Coming to the world of video games, 2020 for turn-based games has been a fantastic year, very prosperous, and full of great releases and new announcements. Here you will find the top 10 according to doubt and a top 5 according to Aiori. As you know, in Keep an Eye On It we talk about games in the works, and therefore we are projecting towards 2021 and often beyond. In this seventh episode I have collected 5 very interesting projects and I can’t wait to read your opinions.

So let’s start this episode with 5 indie turn-based RPGs & strategy games to keep an eye on them.

The picture in my mind is clear: it’s the 24th of December and there is the “little me” under the covers. It’s almost midnight and I should sleep but I can’t. I’m waiting for something, a blurry reddish shadow, a soft sound of steps on the floor, and, maybe, the faint smell of sweets.
When I was young, Christmas was all here, in the emotions aroused by the expectation.

It didn’t matter what I was waiting for, it could be a robot, a remote-controlled car or the brand new Intellivision. This was not really important. Most of the joy was in the anticipation, in the loooong waiting between the end of the summer and that magical date, but obviously, at that time, I cannot explain why the waiting was so exciting.
The fact is that our imagination, like Lewis Caroll said, “is the only weapon in the war against reality” and in my mind the robot was always a lot cooler, the car a lot faster and the… Intellivision a lot funnier. By this I don’t mean that my gifts were always disappointing, on the contrary, but they simply couldn’t compete against my imagination.

After all, the situation is the same when we are waiting a game for a very long time. In this case, we talk about hype and everyone knows that “the hype” can be very harmful for the game itself (who said Cyberpunk 2077!?!). And who is responsible for that? It’s obvious, the culprit is, again, our imagination. We can say that the more is the hype the more is the power of our imagination. Nowadays is not so uncommon to announce a game many years before its release and, believe me, this is never a good thing. Waiting sharpens the appetite but not forever, so maybe here, as elsewhere, the best way is the middle way!
