Avowed - Exploring is rewarding
PC Gamer thinks it is very rewarding to explore in Avowed:
Obsidian snuck goodies and secrets around every corner to make exploring Avowed feel worthwhile: 'If you have a lot of dead ends that lead nowhere, you learn the lesson as a player: This game doesn't have much to offer me'
"Around every corner there's a little something that somebody hand placed for everyone."
When I had the chance to talk to Avowed region director Berto Ritger recently, I had one thing on my mind: How every nook, cranny, dead end, rooftop, and pond in the game had something hidden in it that was worth my time. Even a bit of vendor trash or upgrade materials in the right place seemed to say, "Hey, we knew you'd look here, we see you."
The towns and countryside of the Living Lands may not have had the simulationist "real place" vibe of a Deus Ex or even an Elder Scrolls game, but the more videogamey joy of always being rewarded for exploration in Avowed tickled my brain in a different way.
Ritger characterized his role as overseeing area design, environment art, and narrative design for particular regions of Avowed's world, ensuring that everything fit together and gelled with the zone's identity, while occasionally pitching in with more direct design contributions.
Ritger specifically oversaw Dawnshore, Emerald Stair (for part of development), The Garden, and the ending sequence, while he had a more direct hand in designing the prologue island and the opening of the memorable quest, Dawntreader—that's the one with the magic crystal mech and the weird golden priest.

Avowed Review
An Empire of Mushrooms
Obsidian Entertainment is in a much different place today than when it Kickstarted the original Pillars of Eternity. A move that ended up saving the company after a string of cancelled projects, it was also one of the first wave of titles to bring isometric RPGs back into the popular sphere. That game was filled with Obsidian’s fingerprints, from its verbose musings on existentialism to a somber setting where mortals live under the gaze of meddling gods. In the decade since, the company has been acquired by Microsoft and placed in a much less precarious position, one which has given the opportunity to craft something on the scale of its newest title Avowed. Re-envisioning the world of Pillars of Eternity as an action RPG is a task that loses some of that game’s charm, but forges its own identity that’s worthwhile all its own.
Taking place in Eora some time after the events of Pillars of Eternity II, Avowed sees the player taking on the role of the Envoy. Tasked by the Aedyran Emperor with uncovering the truth about a potential plague, the player sets off to The Lost Lands, an outlying island outside the jurisdiction of all the major powers. Upon their arrival, not only do they learn that the plague, known as the Dreamscourge, is real, but they must also contend with hostile natives, an encroaching imperial reach, and the brutal efforts of the zealous paladin order the Steel Garrote. There is also the voice in their head that keeps talking to them in their dreams.
[...]
Avowed is a surprising title, less in how entertaining it is and more in the ways it is entertaining. Obsidian set out to take the Pillars of Eternity franchise in a big, dumb action direction and largely it succeeded. It’s a blast to play, reducing a lot of the friction in the RPG mechanics while gaining strides in the action department. It feels good in the hands in ways that its contemporaries don’t, zipping the player all around the map. Even with a less-intriguing script, the decision-making doesn’t feel compromised. Every other issue with the game feels as though it can be addressed without having to crack the foundation open, leaving curious thoughts of what a sequel might be able to accomplish. Ignoring that, Avowed is still absolutely an adventure worth the time.

Living large in the Living Lands.
You know, you could never accuse Obsidian of not putting the effort in. Sure, they have a fairly consistent track record of piggybacking other developer’s IPs, but they also have a fairly solid penchant for improving certain aspects of those IPs (Fallout New Vegas, for example). And when they do new things that don’t feel necessarily “fresh” (like, say, The Outer Worlds), they usually come off as knowing homage rather than any kind of shameless rip-off. With Avowed, they’ve kind of combined all their usual powers into one.

Avowed Review
Imagine if Skyrim was good. Now imagine if Skyrim was set in the world of Eora, which Pillars of Eternity introduced us to with its rich, dark history, high fantasy politics, and focus on unique gods. While comparing titles can feel reductive because creative works are much more than their ilk, one can’t help but feel the echoes of other first-person action RPGs in Avowed. That said, Avowed is distinctly Obsidian in its storytelling, and this is most certainly the world of Eora. Hylea be praised.
[...]
I’ve already commented on the outstanding voice acting, but the music is no slouch, either. Pillars of Eternity has one of my favorite soundtracks of any game out there, and while Avowed is a bit different stylistically, notes of Eora resound. No matter where I was, the music matched the environment and accentuated my exploration and conversations. I won’t say that this is one of my favorite soundtracks out there, but I’m impressed by the atmosphere supported aurally, not just visually.By no means a perfect game, Avowed is an easy recommendation for any RPG lover, especially those invested in Eora. Simplicity is the soup served by Obsidian, and, in doing so, Avowed shines pristinely and with outstanding design. A bit more spice wouldn’t hurt, but over-seasoning risks ruining any stew. That said, the plot and physical world are anything but simple, and that’s where Obsidian has invested its talent. After all, why else are you playing an Obsidian title?

Avowed Review
Avowed understands the joy of adventure, offering a rich, immersive experience that, while not without flaws, is well worth the journey.
Obsidian Entertainment is well known within the realm of RPGs, and Avowed, an action role-playing title under the banner of Xbox Game Studios, is their most recent ambitious project. Set in the world of Eora, the same universe as that of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed leaves behind the tactical isometric combat to engage in first-person action full of sword fights, spell casting, and treasure hunting.
The world of Avowed feels lovingly contrived in a way only reminiscent of the last generation, with its rigid designs contrasting modern RPGs with open sandboxes. But what does seem to limit at first seems liberating thereafter as you progress, unlike most modern RPGs that are obsessed with their seriousness.
[...]
Verdict
Avowed is a decent RPG with strong storytelling and exploration, but its combat and enemy variety fall short. Despite some flaws, its immersive world and adventure-driven design make it a worthwhile journey, especially for Pillars of Eternity fans.Score: 76/100

The Gamer checked out Avowed's character creation:
Avowed's Floral Mushroom Woman, I Want To Run To You
When the initial previews for Avowed dropped, the loudest mouths you know were up in arms about an ugly character model. It turned out this had been made deliberately ugly by one of the previewers, stretching the expansive character creator to its limit, and all the fuss turned out to be about nothing. Now, as Avowed’s marketing picks up (finally!), we're seeing even more of the sorts of characters you can create, and rather than ugly glitchfests, they are in fact the most ethereally beautiful creatures ever conceived.
One of the Envoys shown off (the name for the player character in Avowed, like Tav in Baldur's Gate 3) answers the question 'what if Taylor Swift was a flower goddess from a mushroom planet?'. There are other delicate creations too, but also more rugged offerings, and creative monstrosities in the mix as well. This is a sign of an excellent character creator, and an excellent character creator is often the sign of an excellent game.

Avowed - Incredible Freedom
Couchpotato spotted an Avowed overview:
How Avowed Lets You Choose Your Own Adventure with Incredible Freedom
Summary:
- Avowed offers players an incredible level of freedom in quests, character interactions, and combat for a deeply immersive fantasy role-playing experience.
- Choices in Avowed can affect character relationships, quest outcomes, and overall journey through the game.
- Avowed is launching February 18, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox app for Windows PC, Battle.net, Steam, and cloud and will be available on day one with Game Pass.
“Your worlds, your way” is not just a motto for Obsidian – it’s truly how they think about their players. Freedom lives within everything they do, informing how they design quests, regions, combat, and more - it’s these elements that help make an “Obsidian RPG” great (and why “Obsidian RPG” is a term you can immediately recognize in the first place).
Ahead of the Avowed launch on February 18, 2025, I spoke with the team behind the upcoming fantasy role-playing game to learn more about the process that offers players such a huge level of agency - and how this philosophy is being pushed in this game more than ever.

Lore of Eora - Species | A Pillars of Eternity and Avowed Visual Guide
Eora is the original world created by Obsidian Entertainment for Pillars of Eternity and Avowed. To ease new players into this rich setting—or to provide returning players with a refresher—we present Lore of Eora, a five-part series designed to make exploring its ancient mysteries, vibrant histories, and captivating metaphysical properties accessible for all. Prepare to uncover the secrets of the Living Lands and immerse yourself in the world that awaits.
Lesson 1:
Species The most dominate species in Eora or its people, collectively known as kith. Kith are comprised of five species, each with their own cultures and customs: humans, aumaua, orlans, dwarves, and elves. And within each of these species, rare beings born with exceptional attributes and distinct features are born; these are known as the godlikes. This episode will introduce us to each of these major kith species and give an overview of how they interact with the world of Eora.

Avowed Hands-On - After 4 Hours This RPG Bought Me with Its Story and Dialogues. Obsidian Knows What It's Doing
It seems that Obsidian is on the right path to give us a really solid RPG. A few hours with Avowed has already made me look forward to the release.
My relationship with Avowed can certainly be considered complicated. On the one hand, it's a game I've been eagerly waiting for because it means a return to my favorite fantasy world. On the other hand, the first materials from the game weren't optimistic... to put it mildly. So I was skeptical because Avowed seemed like a title many years too late. However, subsequent presentations gave me hope that there was something with potential behind this not-so-attractive facade.
So we've come to the present moment, when a preview version of the game ended up in my hands. And you know what? Obsidian proved two things to me: First, they can't advertise their own games and they harm themselves by doing so. They should finally hire better people for doing trailers and gameplay showcases. Second, Avowed looks promising and could be an impressive return to form after a moderately successful The Outer Worlds. This is really an inconspicuous gem that can surprise many people.

Big Preview: Avowed – Exclusive access and hands-on impressions of Xbox's first must-play RPG of 2025
With access to Obsidian's studio and hours spent playing Avowed, we dive-deep into one of the biggest video games of next year
Avowed is quickly shaping up to be Xbox's first big hitter in 2025, and a major landmark for RPG fans. While developer Obsidian Entertainment have released great games since they were bought by Microsoft back in 2018, those of us who have adored the studio since Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity have been desperate to see what the studio could accomplish with a full-on Xbox exclusive RPG, and with all the blockbuster power that comes with it.
It goes without saying that when we got the call to visit Obsidian Entertainment HQ in Irvine, California, we jumped at the opportunity to neglect the sunshine and instead stay indoors pouring over every facet of Avowed available to us. That means talking to the great RPG developers responsible for this rather unique and funky fungal take on the genre, and, of course, spending many hours with the opening of the game. We get into it all, from getting started with questing, meeting the companions, the combat, and more – all while discussing it all with the many individual developers that have been crafting it.

As soon as I got off the boat and set foot in Dawnshore, the first major open zone of Avowed, I knew I was in for a good time. The port city of Paradis is absolutely dripping in character. From the mix of weathered buildings with missing bricks, merchants waving me over to see their wares, and a handful of thieves hanging about that don’t want to talk to me, it all felt so alive. So naturally the first thing I do is climb to the top of the bell tower for a better view and discover some gold coins resting inside a bird’s nest. “The game anticipated I might go here; this is going to be great.”
Player choice is at the forefront in Avowed and it’s a theme that is infused into just about everything you can do within the game’s world, born from a studio that prides itself on the motto of, “Your Worlds, Your Way.” That means everything is on the table, from complex dialog choices to customized character builds that let you choose how you want to explore the Living Lands within the world of Eora. Combat also fits within this framework of player choice, and it was an aspect that I explored in detail during a recent hands-on media event for Avowed.
I must have tried close to a dozen weapons during my session (the powerful arquebus rifle would become my favorite, more on that in a bit), but having the freedom to cycle between axes and bows and hammers and wands and even a spell book was incredibly flexible. I felt encouraged by the game to experiment even though my starting background as a ‘War Hero’ began to feel more like a suggestion – as designed.

Avowed - No Romance
The Nerd Stash thinks avoiding romance options is a smart move by Avowed:
Why Avowed Shunning Romance Options Is a Smart Move
Is romance dead?
Romance is hard. The prospect of “wooing” a potential partner is liable to strike fear into any teenager and young adult, what with all the social, societal and personal concerns. Arguably, it only gets harder as you get older. Romancing in games is often a lot simpler. It usually revolves around repeatedly picking the “romantic” dialogue option until you find your player character doing the dance with no pants with a companion. This rudimentary approach has many issues, so when Avowed director Carrie Patal says the upcoming RPG will not have a romance system, I think that’s a good thing.

Avowed - Skyrim Comparison
PC Gamer compares Avowed with Skyrim:
Obsidian seems scared people will compare Avowed to Skyrim, but it shouldn't be - the similarities are obvious, but the differences make it compelling
Bethesda's RPG looms large over Obsidian's latest, but having played it, there's no need to shrink from the comparison.
Within seconds of being set loose in a behind-closed-doors demo of Avowed at Gamescom, I had already walked up to a plant and ripped it apart for some key ingredient. The Skyrim-ness of Avowed has been much debated - Obsidian repeatedly downplaying the comparison, no doubt due to fears of disappointing anyone expecting something the size and scope of Bethesda's sandbox behemoth.
This is all fine and good - I cannot speak to the size of Avowed, or the depth of its story. What I can say is that, having played through a dungeon-sized encounter, there is a comforting familiarity to Avowed's moment-to-moment exploration. Let's not beat around the bush: It's kinda like Skyrim.

Avowed Hands-On Preview: Like Skyrim with Good Combat
At Gamescom we got to play an hour of Obsidian's fantasy RPG, and it's clearer than it ever was just how much focus has been placed on combat.
"It's like Skyrim with guns." The infamous quote from the now-disgraced internet personality still seems to haunt a lot of gaming discourse. And so, to satisfy my ego and push the conversation away from a very strange bloke, I offer a new Skyrim-based comparative for Avowed. "It's like Skyrim with good combat." See? We even got all the way to "It's like Skyrim with g-"
While it might seem derivative of all that Avowed offers, that was the strongest feeling I had while playing through an hour of Obsidian's upcoming fantasy RPG. The gameplay demo centred on one dungeon, and a single quest within it. There are a few environmental puzzles, plenty of enemies to fight, and a mini-story that you can wrap up in one of a few ways. A classic Skyrim-like experience, complete with your companion crouching as soon as you get into stealth and delivering witty remarks whenever you round an important corner.

Avowed's enjoyable Gamescom demo makes me want to check out Pillars of Eternity - Preview
Of all the first-party games Xbox showcased at this year's Gamescom, the one that is probably of most interest to us at RPG Site is Avowed, the next game from the role-playing veterans at Obsidian Entertainment. Set in the world of Eora, Avowed is related to the Pillars of Eternity series, but Obsidian continues to promise that the game will be welcoming to newcomers.
I'm a fan of several Obsidian titles already, but admittedly, I haven't yet made the time to check out either entry of Pillars of Eternity myself. I enjoy CRPG-style games, so that's not a concern, and Bryan's glowing review of Deadfire piqued my interest years ago. But actually sitting down and getting a chance to play through Avowed's enjoyable Gamescom demo may finally push me to boot up those titles that have been sitting dormant in my Steam library.
The demo of Avowed at Gamescom sees the player character and Aumaua companion Kai (voiced by Brandon Keener, known for Garrus Vakarian in Mass Effect) head into a cavern to seek a missing expedition team, which takes place relatively early in the game. Three player builds were available: a melee 'barbarian' warrior type, a dual-pistol-wielding ranged type, and a magic "blood mage". In the time allotted, I had the chance to check out the melee and ranged builds, but not the magic one.
Avowed is a nicer-looking game than I expected, at least in some ways, with a vibrant color palette full of greens, blues, and reddish tones alongside some satisfactory lighting. The artstyle goes for a slightly stylized look over high-fidelity realism, and I got acquainted with it relatively quickly. Some components of the user interface could use some small adjustments for my liking, as there's a lot of floating text and indicators. There's time for polish before the game releases, however, and I'm not certain what options will be available to the player in the full game.
You navigate a wooded and partially submerged cavern in first-person, taking on a handful of aggressive Xaurip lizards and other creatures that inhabit the area. Combat is, for the most part, separated into main-hand and off-hand attacks, using a stamina bar that dictates when actions can be performed.

Avowed - Third-Person Mode
Gamerant talks about the 3rd-person mode of Avowed:
What to Expect From Avowed's Third-Person Mode
Highlights
- Avowed, a fantasy RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, will feature a third-person mode for players who prefer it.
- Despite a focus on first-person mode during marketing, third-person offers a unique perspective with cinematic potential.
- Third-person mode could attract players who prefer customization and cinematic experiences in RPGs.
One of Microsoft's most anticipated games of next year is Avowed. Created by Obsidian Entertainment - the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Wilds - Avowed is a fantasy RPG in the Pillars of Eternity universe that places heavy emphasis on both player decisions and combat. While the game bears a resemblance to Obsidian's previous RPG titles, one highly requested feature will allow players to view the Living Lands from multiple perspectives.
The Outer Worlds was met with positive reviews from critics and players alike, but there was a notable absence from the game when compared to many other Bethesda-style RPGs: the ability to toggle to a third-person view. Many fans complained about this omission. Some wondered why they had devoted time to customizing a character that they would never get to see outside of menus, while others who suffer from motion sickness were frustrated about not having the option to change perspectives. After all, the feature made its way into the gameplay of Fallout: New Vegas, which was released in 2010. Though Avowed has primarily shown off first-person gameplay, Obsidian has confirmed that players will have the option to play the game in third-person.

The Pros of Third-Person in Games Like Avowed
Still, having third-person mode as an option can only benefit the game. The mode will not only be a plus for those already planning to play the game, but it has the potential to draw in players who might have skipped out on the game if it only offered a first-person experience. Being able to view the protagonist while exploring the world or switch to third-person during a climactic boss fight to show off the many combat options in Avowed can make the game much more cinematic. In RPGs that allow for in-depth character customization, people love toggling into third-person to inspect and appreciate the character they meticulously crafted or the armor set they spent hours collecting.[...]

Avowed - Delayed to early 2025
PC Gamer reports that Avowed will be released in 2025:
Obsidian's first person RPG Avowed is reportedly getting delayed into next year despite being 'in good shape' for its original November release
The move is apparently intended to give the RPG a bit of "breathing room" from a crowded holiday season.
According to The Verge's Notepad newsletter (users may encounter a paywall) on Microsoft happenings, Obsidian's first person action RPG Avowed is about to get delayed into early 2025. The game itself is supposedly in "good shape" to meet its original November release window, but Microsoft is sheepish about overcrowding its holiday release schedule.

Avowed - Interview
Windows Central checked out Avowed:
"If we were going to do romance, we were going to really, really, really do it right — or not at all." Avowed developers talk companions, quests, and more for Obsidian's upcoming Xbox RPG
After speaking with some of the Avowed team leads, my excitement for this RPG is through the roof.
One of my most anticipated games of 2024 is also one of the biggest first-party releases of the year from Xbox. Avowed is the next major title from legendary studio Obsidian Entertainment and is a semi open-world fantasy RPG that will give players an all-new perspective on the world of Eora - the universe that gave rise to both Pillars of Eternity games.
Many have described Avowed as being Obsidian's take on The Elder Scrolls, but I'm personally just excited to see the studio tackle a more traditional fantasy RPG for the first time. Ahead of Avowed's release later in the year, I was fortunate enough to get the chance to talk with Avowed Creative Director Carrie Patel and Gameplay Director Gabe Paramo at Obsidian Entertainment to talk about their upcoming Xbox RPG — including the recently revealed gameplay improvements, quests, choices and consequences, companions, and much more.

Avowed - Interview @ RPG Site
RPG Site interviewed Carrie Patel and Game Paramo about Avowed:
Avowed Interview - Talking Companions, gameplay, and world with Obsidian's Carrie Patel and Gabe Paramo
During the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 event, Obsidian Entertainment showcased a new story trailer for the upcoming Avowed, as well as a gameplay deep dive episode of the official Xbox Podcast. Although we don't yet have a hard release date, Obsidian's newest RPG is slotted to release later this year.
After the new trailer and deep dive, RPG Site had a chance to sit with game director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Game Paramo to learn some insight about Avowed's world, gameplay, and characters.
This interview has been slightly edited for clarity.
RPG Site: I've played several Obsidian games, such as The Outer Worlds, but I've never played Pillars of Eternity. You've said in the past that it's the same world, not a sequel, or anything like that. But for someone like me, is there anything I should know going into Avowed from a premise standpoint? How does it connect, and are you hoping that a game like this gets people interested in Pillars?
Carrie Patel: I assume that many of our players are going to come to Avowed with it being their first game set in the world of Eora. And we have intentionally designed and built it and structured our storytelling to welcome in new players. The thing I would tell players who are really curious about what they're going to find is that in world of Pillars of Eternity, the gods exist, souls are real, and they're reincarnated from one life to the next. In basically every Pillars game we've made, there's this interweaving of a very grounded political story about the fate of nations and the self-interest of different communities and how the world shapes itself. Along with that, there's a more esoteric metaphysical story that's usually about the history of the gods, the secrets they keep, the deeper mysteries of the world, and how those how those impact and are impacted by what happens in the physical world.
The player is always a character who was sort of a conduit for both. In Pillars & Deadfire, you were the Watcher; you could see souls, and you learned truths about the gods that nobody else had access to. In Avowed, you're a separate character. You're the envoy of Aedyr. So you are directly sent by the Emperor of Aedyr himself, but you also have a connection to something else deeper in the world that you'll get to know over the course of the game.

Avowed - Interview @ Gameinformer
Gameinformer talked with game director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo about Avowed:
Avowed Interview
Avowed's Creators On Why Romance Was Considered, But Ultimately Not Included And Skyrim Comparisons
Avowed was featured as a major part of Xbox's Summer presentations. The game appeared in the Xbox Game Showcase, and following the new footage, game director Carrie Patel appeared on the official Xbox podcast to share more gameplay and share more about the game. We caught up with Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo to find out even more about Avowed, covering what they think of comparisons to Skyrim, how they feel about Baldur's Gate 3, why romance was considered for the game but ultimately not included, and why playing The Outer Worlds may gave you the best idea of what to expect from Avowed.
Can you tell me more about Avowed’s third-person option? That’s likely how I will play the game.
Carrie Patel, game director: So, as you yourself have just noted, there are a lot of people who simply prefer it. There are people who prefer it for aesthetic reasons. They've built this character, and they want to see them in the world. There are people who prefer it because of accessibility reasons. First-person maybe makes the motion sick, and FOV sliders don't quite get them comfortable. So yeah, there are a lot of reasons to have it. There are a lot of players who prefer it for some reason or another. But we're still giving players the same Avowed experience in third-person. Gabe can speak more to that.Gabe Paramo, gameplay director: So, to be super clear, right? This is a first-person game with a third-person perspective. So, when we talk about feel, there might be some micro-adjustments – in terms of, like, the physics of the capsules, super micro – in order to give a little bit of leeway for the animation frames to kind of make those blend a bit better, but we want it to feel as snappy. And we and it's going to feel in control exactly like the first-person game.

Avowed - Interview
Screen Rant talked with the devs about Avowed:
Avowed Developers On Making A Game Where "The Politics Are As Dangerous As The Creatures"
SUMMARY
- Avowed offers a new adventure in the Pillars of Eternity universe, taking players to unseen places with new characters.
- The game is more story-focused than open-world, allowing players to choose weapons from magic to firearms.
- Companions play a key role in the storyline, representing different cultures and viewpoints in the Living Lands.
Avowed will take players back to the Pillars of Eternity universe, bringing them into a brand-new adventure in the world of Eora. The upcoming release from Obsidian Entertainment will take players to never before seen places in the established universe, introducing a myriad of new characters alongside a few long-time fans will recognize. Though there's still a lot under wraps, this week's Xbox Showcase during Summer Game Fest offered a bit more insight into what players can expect.
[...]
Screen Rant: Can you talk a little bit more about where this fits into the established Pillars of Eternity universe and lore, that sort of thing?
Carrie Patel: Yeah, it takes place a few years after the end of Deadfire, but the events and the story, and most of the characters, are pretty separate from the previous games. If you come to Avowed as a fan of the previous Pillars games, you'll certainly see a few characters you recognize, including Inquisitor Lodwyn. You'll definitely hear references to events and places that you may be familiar with, but if you're a fresh player, there's nothing there you have to know . It really just builds and fills out the world because this is a new adventure, a new story, and largely a new set of characters.
Matt Hansen: And very critically, a new protagonist. In Pillars 1 and 2, you play as the Watcher of Caed Nua. You're not that guy now. You're an entirely different person, as Carrie mentioned earlier from the Aedyran Empire, so lots of room to explore.

Avowed - No Romance
Interesting interview from Eurogamer with the Avowed leads. One interesting tidbit:
What's going on in Avowed?
[...]
"You can't romance your companions in Avowed," Patel confirms. "I know we did some romances for companions in Deadfire, but the thing we found, which I'm sure any developer who has tried them has found, is that to pay them off, you really have to invest a lot in doing them well. And you also want to balance whatever you're putting into romantic relationships with ensuring that players who don't choose the romance path still have a fulfilling and complete experience with those companions."

Avowed - Player Choice
Player Choice is the key - says Carrie Patel at an interview with Gamesradar:
Avowed's commitment to ubiquitous player choice could make it 2024's standout RPG: "At Obsidian, it's your world, your way, right?"
Interview | In combat, in questing, and in everything between, Avowed puts you at the heart of everything it does
Avowed could change the face of the RPG genre. That's not to heap undue pressure on Obsidian Entertainment, the studio now lining up its latest venture under the Xbox Games Studios umbrella following 2018's high-profile acquisition. But if recent history has taught us anything in this space, it's that role-playing games can, and often do, make a splash when mixing the right ingredients.
2023 alone delivered some of the most unforgettable, genre-defining experiences we've seen in some time, with games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Sea of Stars helping to push the boundaries of what RPGs can, could, and maybe even should be moving forward. Player choice, in combat and narrative terms, was a driving force in last year's biggest success stories – and so with a studio so well-versed on both fronts at the helm of Avowed, the fantasy-with-firearms role-player already has a lot going for it. From Fallout: New Vegas to South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Outer Worlds, and the Pillars of Eternity series, after all, Obsidian is no stranger to leaving its mark on a tried and tested formula.
"Player choice is really key to all of our games at Obsidian," says Avowed game director Carrie Patel. "And for us, that is really about letting the player build and express their character. It's about who they want to be in the fantastical worlds we build, and the dilemmas and challenges we put in front of the player. I personally find that to be really effective in games where you have some sort of starting premise that prompts roleplay and gives you something to make difficult choices around."

Avowed - Not for Pacifists
According to PC Gamer Avowed will focus on combat:
Obsidian's next RPG Avowed won't have the option to do 'a pure pacifist run'
Avowed has a 'focus on combat'.
Discovering just how many pacifist choices you could make in the original Fallout was a delight, because not only were you allowed to talk or sneak your way out of problems, but the game recognized you were doing that and rewarded you for it. Subsequent RPGs and immersive sims sprinkled peaceful options in, but an entirely pacifist playthrough often ends up being a masochistic challenge that feels more like you're breaking the game than playing it. Just have a look how much of a hassle it is beating The Outer Worlds as a pacifist.
Given that Avowed is drawing inspiration from Vermintide's best-in-class first-person combat, it's no surprise that Obsidian's upcoming RPG won't let you go 100% nonviolent. Speaking to PC Gamer this week, game director Carrie Patel said, "This isn't a game where you're gonna have a pure pacifist run."
That doesn't mean spilling blood will be the only way to clear your questlog, however. You'll still be able to talk your way out of some problems, like you could in Pillars of Eternity. "Players can expect to see solutions and opportunities to use dialogue, maybe take advantage of reactivity with regards to characters they might have helped or met earlier in," Patel went on, mentioning there will be "some stealth solutions," but players should expect a "focus on combat."

Avowed - Was originally co-op
Eurogamer reports that Avowed was originally planned as a co-op game:
Obsidian says Avowed was originally co-op but it just wasn't Obsidian enough
"We realised that we weren't focused on the things that we're best at".
As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Obsidian Entertainment has been airing a documentary series digging into the studio's history, and the newly aired final episode has a little to say about its future too, sharing a few details on the upcoming Avowed, including the revelation it started life as a co-op experience before pivoting to a single-player RPG.
"When I look back at 20 years, there's decisions of mine that I feel really good about, there's decisions that I feel not so good about", studio head Feargus Urquhart admits at one point in the documentary. "One of the things where I really pushed was that Avowed was going to be multiplayer, and I kept on that for a long time."
Urquhart says his insistence on multiplayer came from the belief it would make Avowed more interesting to publishers. At the time, the studio was independent - its since been acquired by Microsoft - and Urquhart reasoned, "When you're asking for 50, 60, 70, 80 million, you've got to have something interesting to talk about and multiplayer made it interesting."
"I know, in the end, it was the wrong decision to keep on pushing on it," Urquhart admits, at which points Obsidian head of development Justin Britch takes over the story, shedding more light on the tangle Avowed's early multiplayer focus was getting the studio in.

Avowed - Is not Skyrim
Feargus Urquhart tells PC Gamer what type of game Avowed is:
Avowed started as Obsidian's Skyrim, but evolved to focus on depth over breadth, 'where Obsidian really shines'
"We backed up and said again: What are we good at? What's our lane?"
When Avowed was first announced with a CGI trailer back in 2020, the headlines and discussions that it sparked all pointed to one specific game: Skyrim. Even though the teaser didn't give away much, the similarities were clear. First-person view; a sword in the right hand, a spell in the left. Surely this was Obsidian's take on an enormous Bethesda-style RPG?
And yes, it turns out that was the plan—at least at first. "Originally we were pitching, in essence, our Skyrim," confirms Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart in an exclusive interview with PC Gamer.
But that is not what Avowed, as it currently exists, is going to be. "I think over the course of time as we worked on it… Bethesda makes an awesome Skyrim. Mojang makes an awesome Minecraft, and Turn10 makes awesome racing games," says Urquhart, referencing a handful of Obsidian's sister studios at Microsoft. "What we do is we make our awesome RPGs, right?"
The feeling, then, was that Obsidian were better served not following Bethesda's example of a grand, open world, but instead staying true to what an Obsidian game should be. "That's when we backed up and said again: What are we good at? What's our lane?" That core, for Urquhart, is Obsidian's dedication to storytelling. "Outer Worlds is the greatest, latest example of that, and even Pillars. Pillars is less linear than Outer Worlds, but it's still a game that has you go through a story. And [Pillars of Eternity] 2 was even less linear, but still again you have this core story as you're going."
For Avowed, the focus is going to be specifically on your companions, and how their story relates to the driving narrative of the game. "We could go off and create an 8km x 8km open world and then deal with all the consequences of that—because that makes it a different style game. But we want to tell more confined stories that the player can experience with their companions, and then move from part of the world to part of the world. And, like I said, in the end, that's us."

Avowed - Leaks and Rumours
Windows Central has posted an article according to which an early working version of the game would be close.
Details on Xbox exclusive Avowed: The Outer Worlds meets medieval fantasy
[...]
Sources familiar with internal plans have reached out to us in recent months offering details on Avowed, moving through pre-production towards a playable alpha state. Indeed, Obsidian is likely close to having a working early version of the game, with many mechanics and core gameplay pillars already implemented. I can't be sure how old some of the footage I've seen is, and there's a good chance it's far further along.
[...]
The Outer Worlds fans already have plenty of reasons to be excited about Obsidian's upcoming slate, given that The Outer Worlds 2 has been confirmed. Avowed seems to be based on a similar, albeit enhanced engine from The Outer Worlds, complete with action-oriented first-person combat and deep RPG exploration and narrative systems. We were told Avowed will feature multiple class playstyles and borrow from Skyrim's two-handed combat system. You could wield two daggers and be a stealthy rogue, or dive into archery with a two-handed bow. You could use a combination of swords and magic, or go full two-handed magic, which is required to wield some of the game's more potent spells and abilities.
Avowed will feature many elements Pillars of Eternity fans will be familiar with. Wizard spells like Jolting Touch, which can fry enemies with forks of lightning, will be present. Two-handed spells like Fireball are conjured using complex-looking hand gestures, but decimate enemies in a storm of magma and fire. I also saw status effect spells like Fetid Caress, imbuing enemies with corrosive poison. Weapon enchantments seem to be a big feature too, with magically enchanted swords and frozen arrows, as examples. Pillars-style guns may also appear in the game, similar to the muskets and arquebuses found in the original two titles. Familiar creatures such as the lizard-like Xaurips will appear, alongside much larger and deadlier threats, all the way up to wyverns and drakes.
The combat seems to be more loadout-based than The Elder Scrolls, which gives you mountains of spells in a gigantic list. Warriors will get access to more physical attacks like swordplay, powerful kicks, and shield bashes, while casters will be given a range of spellbook options to customize and tailor their combat style, with attacks bound to specific buttons.

Avowed - Info and Rumors @ PC Gamer
PC Gamer has collected some info and rumors about Avowed:
Avowed: Release date, gameplay, and everything we know about Obsidian's Skyrim-like RPG
Avowed is a big, first-person RPG set in the same world as Pillars of Eternity, and it looks like it might be Obsidian's spin on The Elder Scrolls. It would make a lot of sense: Over the past decade, Obsidian has garnered love and praise for taking beloved RPG subgenres and adding its a modern spin. Pillars of Eternity was a love letter to cRPG greats like Baldur's Gate, while The Outer Worlds evoked the grim satire and meaningful choices of Fallout: New Vegas (which it also created). Now it looks like Obsidian is inching into Skyrim's territory, and with The Elder Scrolls 6 likely still years away, the idea of a big fantasy first-person RPG is exciting.
