Biomutant - Three Years later

by Hiddenx, 16:18

Gamingbolt checked out Biomutant:

Biomutant – Three Years Later

After launching three years ago in a relatively disappointing state, how does Experiment 101's open-world action title hold up?

Have you ever had a game that sounds too good to be true? It just doesn’t seem possible given the resources, yet the systems are playing out before your eyes. That more or less describes the hype behind Biomutant. Established by former Just Cause developers from Avalanche Studios, Experiment 101 would announce the title in August 2017, just in time for Gamescom attendees to go hands-on with it. Those were the good old days, but even by the standards of double-A titles, Biomutant felt like it was doing an absurd amount of things.

The story occurs in a post-apocalyptic setting where players customize and control a mutant who must save the Tree of Life. To do that, they’ll need to defeat the five creatures assailing its roots, but some cooperation with the six tribes is paramount. The catch is that three have…differing opinions on whether they should ensure the tree’s survival. The Netra, Ankati and Myriad are different degrees of Light tribes and believe in saving the tree. Meanwhile, the Pichu, Jagni and Lotus are Dark tribes with more selfish and/or megalomaniacal views.

Weird characters, a big setting, and tradition RPG elements make for a unique game that doesn't come together as much as you'd like. It just feels half finished in some places and tonally inconsistent in other, making the for a big turn off in the game.

Biomutant - Review @ BATG

by Hiddenx, 18:21

Blast Away The Game checked out Biomutant:

Biomutant Review – An Odd Duck (or Rodent)

Biomutant is an open-world action RPG developed by experiment 101. This fledgling studio is starting out with a lot of attention and big shoes to fill. The hype train started with Playstation shining a spotlight on a gameplay trailer that was put out and the rest is history. As you begin the game proper you are introduced to an impressive display of texture and design that literally throws the world they designed straight into your face. This sets you up with expectations that you will have your MIND BLOWN! And while this is true in many respects this sets up the player with unrealistic expectations from the get-go. Biomutant is an impressive game that does a lot of great things with exploration and player choice, but those triumphs are marred by a story that needs just a bit more work to keep up with the rest of the game’s mechanics.

Technically, Biomutant is beautiful! The world is vibrant and uses color to display how the developers wanted you to know things were going to be weird. The use of color puts the creature’s designs on full display from the get-go and these designs are certainly unique. There are few ways to make me raise an eyebrow (I was working on a biology degree so I have seen some odd designs in nature), but the mixture of rat/ dog/raccoon is something that you would think would be terrible, but actually made me go awwww.

[...]

The Conclusion

All in all Biomutant is the definition of a mixed bag. The gameplay is fun  and the world is beautifully designed. The story is not amazing and leaves too much to the player. Open world playgrounds can be great times and are fun to explore and find all of the secrets in (and oh boy are there secrets in this game to find), but that doesnt mean the weak story will not hamper the experience a bit.

by Silver, 07:51

A recent patch for Biomutant has updated many of the games core systems.

BIOMUTANT Post-release Patch 1.4 01/06/21

Here is the full changelog for the patch that we just launched, the entire patch will roll out on PC first and then Consoles as soon as possible due to the submission process and so on, will ofc give an update when it is launched there.

As always do feel free to come to discuss these changes on the official discord here - Biomutant discord

PC Specific

● Fixed crash with AMD-based CPUs with built-in graphics.
● Fixed crash when device info contains invalid display data on AMD-based CPUs.

Tutorial Area

In order to improve the pacing of the early parts of the game, we’ve edited dialogues to be shorter. We’ve also added more enemies and loot to these areas to better represent the experience later in the game.

● Added more early enemy encounters.
● Added missing loot in empty trenches outside Jagni Fortress.
● Added Item drop chance for Bunker 101 crates.
● Updated Best-Before memory to decrease the distance between the Nonos and the Pensai tree.
● Removed some parts of Out-of-Date and Best-Before’s dialogues to improve pacing.
● Removed multiple dialogue fragments to shorten tutorial area length.
● Removed some parts of Goop and Gizmo’s dialogues to improve pacing.
● Removed multiple camera presentations to improve pacing.

Dialogue & Narrator

● Reduced the amount of gibberish spoken before the Narrator starts translating.
● Added dialogue setting toggles for “Gibberish” and “Narrator” allowing players to select if they want to hear the narrator, the gibberish or both when talking to NPCs.
● Fixed narration and gibberish playing silently and producing an awkward pause when each corresponding volume setting is set to 0 instead of skipping the sound entirely.
● Removed the text delay animation when either gibberish or narration is disabled.

Difficulty Settings

● Added "Extreme" difficulty setting, where enemy damage and attack rate is further increased.
● Fixed difficulty settings not being applied for already spawned enemies.

Gamerevolution - The Final Verdict:

Biomutant is a lively, stylish, and downright joyous open-world game that doesn’t get bogged down in the conventions of the genre. There’s no bloated story here, and its vibrant sandbox setting is anything but barren, as I felt compelled to explore every nook and cranny I stumbled upon in its vast, gorgeous world.

Its combat and crafting systems combine to create effortlessly cool action with tons of customization options, making your arsenal of weapons feel uniquely your own. While its story may not be its focal point, its narrator and wonderfully odd selection of characters are full of charm, with its morality system and eco-friendly message making me feel like I was a part of a thoughtful children’s fable.

Considering Biomutant's delayed and seemingly troubled road to release, I’m blindsided by just how good it is. Experiment 101 has clearly been afforded the time to see its vision through, something which is unfortunately far too rare in the cutthroat gaming industry. I did not expect this to be one of my favorites of the year so far, let alone one of the most enjoyable open-world games I’ve ever played. A true modern gaming miracle.

Biomutant - Interview @Gamingbolt

by Silver, 23:14

Experiment 101 studio head Stefan Ljungqvist spoke with GamingBolt about Biomutant and talked about combat, traversal, the world, and more.

Given the mixture of martial arts melee combat, shooting, and magical abilities in Biomutant’s combat, it seems like there’s a lot of focus on variety. Does that lend itself to build variety as well? How freely can players mix and match, or conversely focus entirely on one style?

There absolutely is a lot of focus on variety! You can mix and match just as you like. You can use all weapons, all skills and any equipment with every character and combine their use as you wish.

Based on all that has been shown so far, it seems like traversal is another area where the game is encouraging variety, and from various vehicles to things such as jetpacks and gliders, it looks like they’re going to be plenty of options available to players. That said, do players have total freedom over choosing their preferred method of traversal, or are there sections of the world or within the story where specific traversal methods are necessary?

Yes, certain parts of the game – for example the big archipelago area, some of it is even polluted, so you will need your skiff boat to travel. But in most parts of the world, you can use a large variety of mounts, jetpacks, flying creatures and such to travel. However, you can’t use certain traversal options in all parts of the game – the Mek is for example only available in the Dead Zone.

How much of an impact do players’ choices have on the story and how it plays out? Can you tell us how many endings the game has?

Yes. Biomutant has 2 major endings in terms of the main storyline around the Tree of Life. Additionally, the Tribe War has his own possible outcomes, depending on which tribe you allied with and how you acted towards other tribes. And many of other choices you made during your playthrough will be reflected on when the game comes to an end.

Biomutant - A Surprise Hit?

by Hiddenx, 19:40

Gamingbolt thinks Biomutant could be a big hit this year:

Biomutant Has the Potential to be One of 2021’s Biggest Surprise Hits

Experiment 101’s action RPG is finally almost upon us, and we’re curious to see how it lands.

You couldn’t be blamed for forgetting that Biomutant exists. Well, it doesn’t quite exist yet it’s still in development but that’s my point. Biomutant was first announced in 2017. Yet we’ve only gotten small drips of information about the post-apocalyptic Kung Fu RPG since then. Those who might have forgotten about it could just as easily be reminded by a very quick description of it being the game about a bunch of bizarre monster animals trying to save the world. Odds are that type of description will find its way to sticking in the back of your mind somewhere. The game has a lot going for it stylistically, as it mixes character creation and customization with the sprawling RPG and a heroic story that puts you in the mix and forces you to navigate your way through it with the skill sets and resources that you have available to you.

Biomutant - Why the Developers have been quiet for so long @ IGN

by Hiddenx, 19:34

Henriquejr spotted an interestesting article about the development of Biomutant:

Biomutant: Here's Why the Developers Have Been Quiet for So Long

Heads down, bugs squashed, script tripled.

After an extended period of being almost silent, developer Experiment 101 recently announced a May release date for Biomutant, its long-awaited open-world action game. That silence was for good reason - studio head Stefan Ljungqvist tells us that parts of the game have become bigger and more complex, but with only 20 people to make all that extra work happen. Rather than ship a buggy game, Ljungqvist says Experiment 101 has been taking its time to quietly build a truly finished product.

“It's a big game, a big bite for 20 people to chew off,” says Ljungqvist. While Biomutant’s map may be just eight square kilometers, it’s packed with warring tribes, conquerable outposts, strange creatures to fight, and a protagonist who can mutate into new forms to overcome obstacles. As we’ve said before, Biomutant looks bananas, and its many moving parts are a challenge for the studio behind them.

Biomutant - Preview @Hardcore Gamer

by Silver, 23:42

Biomutant has been previewed by Hardcore Gamer.

As noted, Biomutant doesn’t go the atypical route of a player-character slowly-but-surely making sense of the world around them. Piecing together why such a once-prosperous/possibly-utopian world crumbled in such a fashion. There are suggestions to some past era here, but the game’s take on ruin is more akin to something like NieR: Automata — floral nature in its many shades of green, melding with the gritty, hollowed-out semblance to some technologically-competent period of yonder. The former, as a result, gives Biomutant a welcome jolt of artistic vibrancy. Even amidst the high-pace antics of its combat, where a player’s self-created mutant-creature fends off a group of other similarly-oddball foes with their own weapons and strategy to match. While one could essentially lump these designs together as mere animalistic — albeit, animal-like with a greater degree of intelligence — the game carries with it that children’s story-like semblance of innocence. Albeit one twisted, turned upside down, by the premise on show — a world on the brink of collapse, the planet’s great world tree suffering due to corruption from an emerging, once-sealed away poison.

Biomutant - Interview

by Hiddenx, 11:26

IGN interviewed the Biomutant devs:

Biomutant Developers Answer the 6 Biggest Questions

Think of a post-apocalyptic Kung Fu Panda action RPG.
By Brandin Tyrrel On the outside, BioMutant is a game about Kung Fu woodland critters in a post-apocalyptic fantasy land full of monsters, mythology, and mechs. So... yeah, it's totally understandable to still have a few questions about what's quickly becoming one of the most intriguing and anticipated games of 2018.

[...]

How big is the open world? What will we do in it?

The world is 16 square kilometers, or approx. 6 square miles, plus some underworld areas, and you’re playing in a world that’s dying.

At the beginning of the game there’s an equilibrium; The Tree of Life that stands tall at the center of everything is struggling to survive, its five behemoth roots stretching out in all directions across the world are being gnawed on by huge creatures working their way in towards the Tree. Players have the choice to seek out these creatures at any time, trying to defeat them or entering into pacts with them – its entirely up to the player. If the creatures are defeated, it increases the likelihood the world will survive at the end of everything.

But perhaps you don’t confront the creatures at all, but instead search for Nono – small spirit potatoes that can cure the roots and help the Tree fight back. But choosing different paths will dramatically alter the experience and the end game. The world will change with your actions; the team’s goal is to create an interesting and interactive experience. As an open world RPG, exploration, discovery and interesting characters are all big parts of the game.

Much of the focus is on the characters in the world and their destiny as its in the player‘s hands. A key goal for the main character is finding out who they are and where they came from. So there’s a part of the story that is reflective and will give glimpses of the world that once where. The meat-eater you confront at the start of the game plays a part in this, as does the Narrator.

BioMutant is much more about the fate of the world as the events caused by the player’s choices are happening, and the characters that live in this world and their destiny, than retelling the history of the world that once was.

Biomutant - New Screenshots

by Silver, 11:52

@DSOGaming New Screenshots for Biomutant.

[...]
The game will also feature real-time combat mechanics, an automation sidekick and a ceative crafting system. BioMutant also promises to feature multiple endings, and will offer at least 10 hours of gameplay. As co-founder and head of Studio at Experiment 101, Stefan Ljungqvist, said:

We’re really trying to encourage replays through our “open way” of completing the game…You are playing as the world is dying and the chance of world survival is represented by a massive tree-of-life that stands at the center of the world with its roots stretching out across the land. As a player, you have the option to heal the tree and such, increasing the chance of world survival at the end of the game. You can end the game without healing the tree; however, your personal end of the game that time will be that the world dies, so kind of a dark ending in some player’s preference.

But if you chose to work to heal the tree of life, you’ll have to find some small spiritual creatures. These creatures are Nono. Nono hide in glitter grass found in the open world and leading them to the root segments. That’ll increase the chance of world survival by a couple of percent per Nono. Or/and you can chose to confront and defeat the huge creature gnawing at the end of each root and this will heal that root completely. Healing all roots will give you a hundred percent chance of world survival at the end of your game – and some players will obviously want to go for that bright ending.

The following screenshots will give you an idea of the colorful environments that the game will feature. THQ Nordic plans to release BioMutant in 2018.

Biomutant Dev Says Their Game Is Similar In Structure To Zelda Breath Of The Wild

Experiment 101's Biomutant has been creating quite a buzz as the game is perhaps one of the most unique takes on an open world RPG.

In the sense that the game is more open and allows you to find and interact with new characters, as opposed to Horizon Zero Dawn which Ljunqvist described as being a great game but much more linear in comparison when it comes to the story

RPGWatch @ Gamescom - Biomutant

by Myrthos, 14:46

Just before Gamescom started Biomutant was announced as a game featurring an open world and Kung-fu. While at Gamescom, I got a chance to get some more information.

At Gamesom, Biomutant was shown to us by Stefan Ljungqvist who previously worked at Avalanche Studios on the Just Cause series and Mad Max and who has now founded Experiment 101. He mentioned this to make clear that there is an experience with creating open world games, which is what Biomutant is.
In the announcement of the game before Gamescom the words open world, post-apocalyptic, kung-fu and fabled were used. Fabled relates to the story telling through an animal, which is what this game does as it features only animals, but it was emphasized that they don't take themselves too serious in doing that. Kung-Fu relates to the player being able to make various moves and during those moves make use of weapons or other skills, while still being able to switch between them smoothly. My observation is that the relation with Kung-Fu is not about being able to use martial arts in hand-to-hand combat, but in the ability to use your weapons or skills in mid-air or while you are rolling or dodging. The post-apocalyptic part is not about a nuclear bomb or a terrible war that took place. In Biomutant it is about an ecological disaster, where dead oil is seeping through to the surface contaminating the world and everything that lives on it.
